Abstract

The main goal of this study is to contrast the anthracological spectrum of the rock shelter Cerro Castillo and the cultural, geomorphologic and climatic phenomena that have occurred during the mid Holocene in the steppes of the region of Magallanes, particularly in the ecosystem surrounding the site (Legoupil 2009, Bertrán 2009, this isme (volume). 629 wood charcoal fragments were retrieved from the site and identied taxonomically. These fragments were collected from 16 levels the column F15 of the rock shelter. Fragments represent seven woody taxa, Nothofagus and Berberis being the most constant alternating yet showing importance along the chronological sequence. Thus, while recent units (II-III) were dominated by tree species, earlier units (IV-V) by shrubby species of the genus Berberis (e.g. 4.500 BP). These results may suggest the occurrence of specic and localised re events aut the site; however, this scenario does not coincide with results from palynological studies in the region, Further anthracological studies, including a larger sampling size, will be required to elucidate the nature of this discrepancy.
