Port Phillip Bay lies in a tectonically controlled depression in which recurrent faulting has occurred from Palaeozoic to recent time. Stratigraphic and geophysical evidence indicates maximum vertical dosplacemtn in the sunkland of more than 2,000 feet.\rVariations in lithology and topographic relief affect the coastal landforms developed on the east and west.
