(from the chapter) Offers a critical view on the influences of environment on aging and behavior by summarizing, integrating, and evaluating empirical research and theoretical contributions. First, the empirical research on environmental gerontology is reviewed by roughly distinguishing between private home environments, institutional settings, and residential decisions. The chapter then discusses theoretical suggestions in light of the "old" theories of environmental gerontology, and then proceeds to discuss which theoretical approaches from psychological gerontology may be fruitful for environmental gerontology. Finally, suggestions are offered for integrating existing concepts in a more cohesive manner. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved).
