This article summarizes the most significant trends in the history of Spanish education abroad. It starts with an introduction where the keys of the theme are explained and also some of the peculiarities in the implementation of this dimension of the foreign relationship in the Spanish case. The text continues explaining the evolution of the Spanish education abroad in each of the four periods that have been established. The conclusions close the text formulating some hypothesis for the future and emphasizing the need of review the success and the challenges to be faced in order to improve the Spanish education abroad in the future.
