Abstract

Because so much of archaeological research involves making “probable” inferences, this chapter reviews some basic principles of probability and some useful theoretical models that can help us make inferences that take probability into account. This includes reviewing the normal, Poisson and binomial distributions and classical null-hypothesis significance testing, while also introducing Bayesian inference.
