Abstract

Presents and discusses current meter array observations on the Southern Californian Shelf (Bight), in conjunction with wind observations. Examines briefly the seasonal characteristics of these time series observations. Evaluates a simplified depth averaged longshore momentum equation consisting of a balance between current accelerations, the adjusted seal level (ASL) gradient and the wind and bottom stress. The model can be used to estimate the depth averaged longshore velocity in winter and autumn, but the summer observations do not fit. Examination of the winds indicates that the winds to the south play a part in generating the observed ASL differences. The summer dynamics are complicated by the presence of a thermocline and strong shears over the shelf. (C.J.U.)
