Abstract

Graphics editors have recently come into wide use. But for displayinghigh quality images, a more powerful tool has been desired. Thispaper proposes a useful display method for Chinese calligraphy, traditionalJapanese ink painting called sumie, and watercolor painting. Themethod comprises techniques to express the outlines of a brush strokeand to vary shades of color. That is, the outlines of a brush strokeare modeled using piecewise Bezier curves, and the variation of grayshade inside of the outline are defined by Bezier functions. Thismethod provides effective characteristics of a brush stroke suchas shade variation, the scratchiness produced by dry brush, and blotchinesscaused by the diffusion of ink.
