Abstract

This chapter has a discussion on how biomedical enterprises can engage the issues of sustainable development for the health-care industry. The chapter focuses on the biomedical sector other than the board sense of biotechnology industries, which typically include bioenergy, bioagriculture, bioremediation, biodefense, etc. The chapter investigates how the biomedical enterprises transform their strategic goals to fulfill the mission of sustainability. After identifying what entails sustainable development in the context of the health-care industry, the chapter addresses the need of a customized framework about sustainable development for biomedical enterprises. Next, the chapter examines current practices on the issues of sustainable development among different sizes or stages of biomedical enterprises. Lastly, the chapter discusses the possible directions of further studies and provides recommendations about how biomedical enterprises could improve their strategies for sustainable development.
