Abstract

The last chapter provides an overview of what has been achieved in research on a competence-based view on models and modeling as presented in this volume, along with identifying a number of challenges that have emerged from the chapters in this book. Some challenges concern discrepancies or tensions between the framework for modeling competence and the approaches that are presented in other chapters. The amendments or extensions of the framework proposed by some other authors are discussed. The chapter concludes with a number of ideas for future research. These include research on instruments and procedures for assessing modeling competence, research on the relationships between meta-modeling and meta-cognitive knowledge, and modeling practices, and longitudinal research on the development of modeling competence over time.
