Abstract

Laser beam welding (LBW) is used for high productivity at a lower cost. Problems during conventional welding process are prevailed over by LBW process. IRSM 41-97 steel is used for building railway coaches and construction of bridges. In this research Autogenous GTAW welding and high-power density and lower energy input CO2 laser beam is used for preparing AGTAW and LBW weld joints. Laser welding produces only a narrow heat affected zone (HAZ) which improves the properties and the quality of the weld. This is due to the high heating and rapid cooling rate of the weld zone. The FEA analysis of both Autogenous GTAW and LBW weld IRSM 41-97 steel joints are made using ANSYS Work bench software. The weld is characterized by studying its micro hardness and microstructure.
