Abstract

Development of mucosal vaccine delivery system is an important area for improving public health. Oral vaccines have large implications for rural and remote populations since the access to trained medical staff to administer vaccines by injection is limited. New mucosal vaccine strategies are focused on development of non-replicating subunit vaccines, DNA, plant, and other types of recombinant vaccines. The conjugation of lipids to peptide antigens is one approach which enables the production of highly customized all-in-one self-adjuvanting vaccines. Lipid-modified peptide vaccines have been successfully investigated in humans and demonstrated to be potent and more importantly very safe. © Springer Science+Business Media, LLC 2009.
