Urinary incontinence is a very nonspecific symptom and an accurate diagnosis of its etiology is essential if a successful treatment is to be anticipated. A simple practical classification is proposed based on the two fundamental factors of bladder equilibrium leading to continence, namely bladder contraction and sphincteric competence. The clinical variants of the symptoms are reviewed and finally the important contribution of radiology in the differential diagnosis of incontinence is stressed.
