Hydrometrocolpos is a condition in which the uterus and vagina are distended by retained fl uid other than blood, in the presence of distal vaginal outfl ow obstruction. The incidence of hydrometrocolpos is 1 in 16,000 live births. The condition is now being increasingly diagnosed prenatally. The incidence is higher in communities having a high degree of consanguinity. The rarity of this anomaly quoted in the earlier literature was probably due to the difficulty in diagnosis and high mortality resulting from infections and associated anomalies, even before the diagnosis could be established. © 2009 Springer Berlin Heidelberg.
