Abstract

One of the main problems in society is dental and oral health so that people need intensive care. Dental and oral conditions which are a serious problem in Indonesia are caused by caries and periodontal disease. Periodontal disease is a disease caused by bacteria and plaque found in the supporting tissues of the teeth. Gingivitis is the first stage of periodontal disease, which can progress to periodontitis. The dominant bacteria found in periodontal disease conditions are Porphyromonas gingivalis and A. actinomycetemcomitans. Porphyromonas gingivalis is an anaerobic gram-negative bacterium that is often found in subgingival plaque. Porphyromonas gingivalis plays an important role in the etiology of advanced periodontal disease and is found in more than 90% of the subgingival flora of patients diagnosed with 'adult periodontitis'. Dates or Phoenix dactylifera are known as healthy foods for a long time, because they have very high tannins and are used in medicine. One of the benefits is its ability to inhibit the growth of bacteria in the oral cavity. Ajwa dates have a sweet taste, soft fruit texture, and dark color. Although Ajwa dates are more expensive than other varieties, they are clearly superior in terms of content and texture when compared to other thin-skinned dates. Research objective: To determine the growth of Porphyromonas gingivalis bacteria resulting from the antibacterial effect of ajwa date fruit extract. Methods and Materials: This study used an in vitro experimental test using the disk diffusion technique with the type of post test only control design. The statistical test used is the Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) test. The sample in this study consisted of 24 samples. Results: Based on the results of the Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) test, the p-value showed a value of 0.000 or a p-value less than 0.05. This means that there is a significant difference between the treatment of ajwa dates 50%, 70%, 100% with the control group. Conclusion: Based on the results of this study, it is explained that ajwa date extract (Phoenix dactylifera l) with a concentration of 50%, 70%, 100% can inhibit Porphyromonas gingivalis bacteria.
