Abstract

In this paper, the relation between “Industry 4.0” and the metadata formats JDF/XJDF is discussed. While “Industry 4.0” is a term for a certain method of production in general, the XML-based data formats JDF/ XJDF are commonly considered being technologies for implementing Industry 4.0 production in the graphic arts industry. The paper shows that the original architecture behind JDF, however, is more compatible with Industry 4.0 that the new XJDF format. For this purpose, some important features of these two data formats are outlined.
