Abstract

Explores the trends and factors in Japan's long-term care insurance system and its ten-year experience. Discusses the aging population of Japan; the development of the long-term care insurance system in Japan; long-term care expenditures in Japan; the effect of the new preventive policy on long-term care expenditures in Japan; measuring efficiency in special nursing homes in Japan--an application of the data envelopment analysis; institutional long-term care expenditures and the proximity to death in Japan; and future challenges in establishing a sustainable long-term care insurance system in Japan.
