Abstract

Pediatric inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) significantly impacts psychosocial functioning, which can affect health outcomes. The purpose of this chapter is to provide an update on the psychosocial literature in pediatric IBD across the domains of health-related quality of life, pain and symptom management, emotional functioning, social functioning, academic functioning, body image, family functioning, self-management, self-efficacy, and health behaviors. Research on psychosocial assessment and intervention will be reviewed, and recommendations to support optimal psychosocial functioning as a part of multi-disciplinary patient care will be provided.
