Critical current density as a function of applied field, is the key design criterion for many applications of superconducting wire. The relationship between the critical current, and the applied field, may be determined by fixing either parameter while varying the other. Pulsed field testing employs a fixed current and a rapidly increasing field that eventually exceeds the critical field for that current, while steady field testing uses a fixed field and a slowly increasing current.
