Abstract

Acute venous occlusion is a clinical entity, the importance of which cannot be emphasized enough. As a rule of thumb, 5% of the general population develops symptomatic acute venous occlusion in his or her lifetime. Diagnosis is established in 200,000 patients annually in Germany alone [90]. The implications regarding morbidity, mortality, and cost are thus tremendous. © 2007 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.
