UMBELLIFERONE and scopoletin have been isolated from the sweet potato roots injured by the black rot disease due to the infection of Ceratocystis fimbriata1. Formation of esculetin (6,7-dihydroxycoumarin) was also indicated on the basis of paper chromatography, but the actual characterization has remained open. This communication presents the evidence for the production of esculetin in the pathogenically degenerated sweet potato root tissue. © 1962 Nature Publishing Group.
