Abstract

In June 1889, after the inauguration of the Ouro Preto viscount's office, the prince consort of Brazil, Conde d'Eu, went on an expedition by the northern provinces. It was a long journey in which would go through the coastal provinces of the vast country, through all the capital of the Amazonas and Bahia. This article analyzes the Republican leaders of political articulations and monarchists on this trip as well as the involvement of provincial leaders in the unveiling of the Empire. Through the texts published in the regional press, the surface is possible to understand the involvement of local elites and even the popular strata in the political polarization that took place at the end of the monarchy.
