Disorders of electrolytes are common in surgical critically ill patients and are associated with increased morbidity and mortality. To provide optimal care, health care providers should be familiar with the modern understanding of the role of electrolytes in physiological homeostasis, and with the most common electrolyte disturbances in the critically ill. However, the evaluation and management of electrolyte disturbances can be challenging. This chapter discusses the etiology, clinical manifestations, diagnosis, and management of sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium, and phosphorous abnormalities.
