Abstract

Ventricular assist device (VAD) therapy in infants and children is less common than in adults and presents unique challenges due to the small body size, potential complex congenital abnormalities, rapid metabolism, developing cognitive abilities, emotional immaturity, and varying family support. Each of these aspects need careful consideration when determining the risk/benefit ratio of implantation of a VAD. There are unique challenges with assisting the child with a VAD and their family to return to their home community. The differences in caring for a child with a VAD will be highlighted here.
