Abstract

It should be clear from Chaps. 7 and 8 that problems involving tangential loading are considerably simplified when they are uncoupled. If the contacting bodies can be approximated by half-spaces, this condition is satisfied if and only if Dundurs’ constant β=0, as defined in Eq. (7.8 ), the most common case being that in which the two bodies are of similar materials. We shall assume that β=0 through Sects. 9.1–9.4 of this chapter.
