Abstract

Atm. N2O concns. have been increasing at a 0.2∼0.3%/yr rate. The rise in N2O concn. in air is mainly due to an increased application of N fertilizers. This work assessed the effect of green manure crops and biochar on N2O emissions from upland crop fields in Korea. The green manure crop used in the study was hairy vetch; the cultivated crop was red pepper (Capsicum annuum L.). N was applied at a 190 kg/ha rate, the std. red pepper N fertilization rate. N2O field emissions were reduced from hairy vetch- and biochar-applied plots by 46.5 and 24.6%, resp., vs. N fertilizer-treated plots with N2O emissions of 1.14 kg N2O-N/ha. Results implied green manure crop and biochar can be used to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from upland crop fields. [on SciFinder(R)]
