Abstract

Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD), a condition resulting in impairment due to preoccupation with a slight or imagined defect in cosmetic appearance, affects millions of individuals worldwide. In this chapter, we explore the epidemiology of BDD within the general population and specific cohorts. We review the studies that have investigated the prevalence of this condition within the USA and global populations. We will also examine the disease in relation to patients presenting to dermatology, cosmetic surgery, and rhinoplasty clinics to better understand the prevalence, presentation, and outcomes of BDD patients within this cohort. Finally, we will review the frequency of BDD in those with various psychiatric disorders, such as major depressive disorder, OCD, and eating disorders.
