Abstract

Schooling in Switzerland consists of five levels: Pre-school, primary (Grades 1-6), lower secondary (Grades 7-9), upper secondary, and tertiary. Education is compulsory through the lower secondary level and is the responsibility of the 26 cantons (provinces) of Switzerland. This decentralized structure for compulsory education provides for local governance based on regional traditions and cultural and linguistic differences. Upper secondary schooling is not compulsory and provides different options for students, including vocational training or Matura (university preparatory) schools.
