Abstract

The thermal aging properties of fine enameled wire of the VJ DIN 46435 type were investigated. The two test criteria applied were extensibility of the enamel layer (enamel elongation) and breakdown voltage. The first provides a more reliable guide to thermal endurance than the latter. The elongation criterion is missing in the IEC Publication 172 and is also to be omitted in DIN 46453 Sheet 2. The paper discusses thermal aging, temperature endurance, limiting temperatures and test criteria.
