Abstract

Parenteral nutrition (PN) is required in the maintenance of fluid and electrolyte homeostasis and nutritional status as well as encouraging growth in infants and children, who cannot tolerate enteral feeding. However, whenever possible, enteral feeding should be given in order to attempt to minimize the complications of PN and promote gut adaptation. © 2010 Springer-Verlag London.
