Reviews recent research on the role of metacognitive skills in reading comprehension in children and adolescents. Characteristics of metacognitive knowledge, differences between metacognitive knowledge and cognitive control, differential development of metacognitive knowledge and control processes, evaluation and self-regulation abilities, and training in metacognitive skills are discussed.
