A focus of this article is on experimental techniques with a special emphasis on the capillary ripple techniques that have been evolved for the study of viscoelastic properties of interfaces and ultrathin, soap-type films. These techniques involve measurements based on a detailed model of hydrodynamical effects. This is contrasted to the crude models for correlating surface viscosity with the damping of a needle or disk oscillating in the surface.
