Discusses how construction of the Aswan Dam and consequent interception of the sediment source for the Nile littoral cell, has resulted in severe erosion in places in the Nile Delta. Present conditions feature a rise in sea level (a factor in erosion). Studies the distribution of recent sediments and historical changes in the shoreline since 1800. The Delta Barrage was built in 1861, the low Aswan Dam in 1902. Estimates the longterm suspended load of the free Nile to be about 30 x 10 SUP 6 m SUP 3/year. Studies wave climate and longshore sand transport and estimates the range for annual longshore transport. Presents the sediment budget derived for the Nile littoral cell, noting driving forces, sediment sources and sinks. (C.J.U.)
