The European Atomic Energy Community (Euratom) research and training program in Generation-IV nuclear fission energy systems is aligned with the Generation-IV Technology Roadmap and, in particular, with the main objectives set in 2002 by the international community (10 countries world-wide), including (1) to stimulate the search for innovative systems (both fuel cycles and reactor technologies) and (2) to guide the research and development on Generation-IV systems as collaborative efforts got underway. The Euratom projects naturally share the high-level goals of Generation IV (which also fit the general European Union energy mix policy, set in the 2015 Energy Union package), including (1) sustainability (optimal utilization of natural resources, which is also related to the security of supply, as well as waste minimization, environmental protection), (2) safety and reliability, (3) economics (industrial competitiveness) including social aspects, and (4) proliferation resistance.
