This paper outlines the fundamental problems arising when scanning calorimeters are used and points out the need to unify the calibration methods applied. The essential features of the GEFTA1 recommendations for a correct and instrument-independent calibration of temperature, heat and heat flow rate of scanning calorimeters are summarized, and the recommended operation procedures, calibration substances and data treatment algorithms are described as short guidelines for operators. © 1995 IUPAC
