There are two major strategies for the development of lead-free piezoelectric ceramics: compositional exploration and microstructural control. The compositional design by the formation of solid solution often improves the room temperature properties of lead-free piezoelectrics while it generally lowers Curie temperature (T C) and limits the potential applications of the ceramics. Texture control of polycrystals, on the other hand, is an effective approach to improve the piezoelectric properties of lead-free materials without changing the composition and T C of the ceramics [34, 35].
