Abstract

Advanced technologies open more possibilities to interact with computers in various different ways. Especially, pen-based computing provides people with an intuitive way to use a computer. In this paper, we present our research on developing pen-based neuropsychological assessment tools for older adults with cognitive impairment. First, we explain the background information and motivation to design technology for the aging population. Then, we describe our two applications: ClockReader and TrailMaker. We then discuss technological affordances to support medical assessment tasks and conclude that pen-based computing could contribute to increase the efficacy of a computer-based assessment tool. © 2011 Springer-Verlag.
