Suicide among youth and young adults remains a serious public health issue. Various theoretical perspectives on the etiology and psychopathology of suicide help contribute to the understanding of suicidal ideation and behavior. Approaches to the prevention and treatment of adolescent mental health problems and suicidal behavior include diagnosis, interventions, and use of evidence-based best practices. These topics are described in subsequent sections of this chapter.
