[See FA 39, 5368] Discolouration was initiated in red maple (Acer rubrum) and hybrid poplar (Populus deltoides X P. trichocarpa) by drill wounds. In A. rubrum, margins of discoloured zones were green and 0.5-1.5 mm wide after 1 or 4 yr; in hybrid poplar they were orange and 1.5-5 mm wide after 1 yr. Marginal zones of both species had more soluble dry matter and phenols than sapwood or discoloured wood, and these phenols differed in their solubility in organic solvents, UV spectra, and chromatographic behaviour. It is suggested that the zones of high phenol content may limit spread of micro-organisms and account for compartmentalization of decay.
