Abstract

In today’s world, Islamic education is facing an alarming dilemma. On one hand, there is a need to modernize the concept and practice of Islamic education. On the other hand, it cannot halt its pace for global competition is a never ending process. Its current challenge is to continuously improve its quality in many fields one of which is to respond to global development. One nation’s incapability to respond to global changes could lead to ideological crisis  endangering the identity of its citizens. Tauhid-oriented education is considered to excel in dealing with global phenomena and to produce socially pious individuals. In addition, it is mandatory for a state as an education system to develop its citizens’ characters reserving the nation’s spirit. The four pillars discussed in the article are considered one alternative door to Indonesia’s revitalization that focuses on human resource development, both on being a good citizen and on modernizing Islamic education
