Abstract

Marburg virus disease is a very severe acute viral pansystemic febrile exanthematous hemorrhagic disease. It was first reported in 1967. The natural host, its habitat and the vector(s), if any, are unknown. The disease and the virus take their name from the town of Marburg in West Germany where most of the cases occurred. The disease has a number of synonyms: green monkey disease, vervet monkey disease, Marburg virus disease. Marburger Affenkrankheit (Marburg monkey disease), Marburg simian disease, the Cercopithecus monkey associated hemorrhagic fever, Frankfurt Marburg syndrome (FMS).
