Abstract

A new ultrasonic camera for real-time imaging of soft tissue is described. This system produces high resolution images of a 15- multiplied by 15-cm field. Its high sensitivity permits penetration of a considerable depth of tissue. Both transmission and reflection imaging are provided. The ultrasonic camera incorporates a unique wavefield deflection system for scanning the image past a linear array of 192 piezoelectric detectors. Linear and logarithmic amplification is proviced in each signal channel. Ultrasonic images of test objects and of human extremities are presented.
