Africa’s natural resources are central to the realization of the sustainable development goals. The continent’s natural capital, consisting mainly of both renewable and non-renewable resources, are key to sustainable development. They contribute to wealth generation, job creation and are central to the industrialization of the continent. During a conference organized in late 2016 by the United Nations University Institute for Natural Resources in Africa identified emerging frontiers for natural resources management in the continent. The five broad area identified are sustainable soil and water management; sustainable mining; the blue economy; energy, climate and the environment; and natural resources in global value chains.
