The following is a descriptive exploratory research, which aiming to identify coping strategies used by patients diagnosed with indication for cardiac surgery. The data were collected in the post-operative period, aiming to characterize the population through a survey, also using a Jalowiec Coping Inventory to identify coping styles used by the subjects to face stressing factors. It has been highlighted the predominance of the supportive style (50%), which means that patients use systems of personal, professional, and spiritual support to face the problem. The optimistic style also happened considerably often (48.5%) for the population and refers to the mental elaboration and positive comparisons in the attempt to minimize the emotions from stressing situations. The identification of coping strategies by patients with cardiac surgery indication allows a nursing assistance with the aim of fulfilling and adapting to the emotional and physiological needs in the surgical process.
