Several treatment regimens for hyperbilirubinemia not involving phototherapy have evolved over many years. Phototherapy-based treatment is described in the next chapter. Of the non phototherapy-based treatments, some have been directed at stimulating or increasing conjugation of bilirubin, while others are attempts to reduce the levels of circulating unconjugated bilirubin.
