A epidemia de gripe espanhola: um desafio à medicina baiana

Abstract

Evidencia o momento em que as autoridades médicas e sanitárias da Bahia foram desafiadas a explicar um mal que se disseminava com inesperada virulência, em meio a incertezas e controvérsias sobre o diagnóstico e a etiologia da gripe, que agitavam a comunidade acadêmica e científica mundial. Analisa o posicionamento da medicina baiana diante dessas discussões e o aporte científico utilizado pelos médicos para explicar o evento epidêmico e recomendar as medidas terapêuticas e profiláticas.The article describes the moment when the medical and health authorities of Bahia state (Brazil) faced the challenge of explaining an illness that was spreading with unexpected virulency throught the world, provoking much uncertainty and controversy among the global academic and scientific community concerning the diagnosis and etiology of the disease. It analyzes the Bahian medical establishment's stance within these discussions and the scientific knowledge used by medics to explain the epidemic and to recommend therapeutic and prophylactic measures.
