Abstract

Buprenorphine is a partial opiate agonist, which is commonly used for the long-term management of opiate dependence. The timing of when to start buprenorphine, as well as how to treat acute pain crises in individuals on buprenorphine can be difficult. This case highlights some of the challenges in treating patients with acute painful conditions, who are chronically on buprenorphine. In addition, a discussion on other outpatient management strategies and opiate withdrawal ensues.
