Abstract

This chapter explores the development of dramatists, directors, and major theatres in England, Wales, Scotland, and Ireland. It then considers mime and physical theatre developments, along with key directors and playwrights in France. It looks at German (and Austrian) theatre artists, West and East, regarding postwar developments. It investigates Polish and Czech dramatists and directors, working under Communist censorship and traveling beyond it. It considers internationally known Italian directors and dramatists, plus Romanian, Russian, Macedonian, and Serbian artists working against and beyond socialist realism.
