Bacterial biofilms are a major cause of human and animal disease. They are associated with antibiotic resistance among pathogenic bacteria. Bacterial biofilms can be harmful as well as useful. In this chapter we explain bacterial biofilm formation and composition and consider many of the harmful and beneficial effects of bacterial biofilms. Additionally, this chapter contemplates control strategies and the future of biofilm studies.
