Abstract

Describes and illustrates how satellite-derived digital elevation models (DEMs) can be used to derive information about glacier dynamical changes. Includes: basics of DEM generation using stereo image data (airborne or spaceborne); use of ground control points and available software packages, postprocessing, and DEM dataset fusion; DEM uncertainties and errors; glacier applications including derivation of relevant geomorphometric parameters and modelling of topographic controls on radiation fields; glacier mapping, elevation change, and mass balance assessment.
