Abstract

Land on the earth surface has been occupied by sovereign states which constitute countries in the world. Coastal areas over time have also been taken over by states based on international law governing the sea. The rights and duties of states are catered for by international legal regime in relation to the environment. The basic principles underlying international environmental law are contained in the various agreements, treaties and protocols at the international level that are established by global organisations and sovereign states towards ensuring environmental security and economic growth. Environmental protection towards ensuring human security is realised through respect and adherence to the various principles governing the environment. Activities by states in their quest to achieve economic growth and development has led to massive degradation of the environment culminating in climate change and pollution. The resulting challenges are seen in marine and atmospheric pollution. The thrust of this chapter is that, to ensure environmental sustainability it is imperative that there are effective policies and laws at the global level to restrain states from abusing the environment. Moreover, there is the need to ensure that administrative institutions established to protect the environment are resourced and given the political will to oversee the adherence of environmental principles that are contained in international agreements that are geared towards achieving environmental security. The study involved a review of relevant literature and other international environmental agreements to come out with a conclusion. It is mainly a desk review.
